New York City Drag March 2025

Growing up in Ecuador in a traditional Catholic environment, I had never experienced a public celebration of self-expression quite like New York City's Drag March. Photographing it for the first time felt almost like stepping into a carnival, a space filled with color, eccentricity, humor, pride, and an extraordinary sense of freedom.

What fascinated me most was the unapologetic individuality of the people around me. Through costume, gesture, performance, and movement, people seemed free to present themselves to the world exactly as they wanted to be seen.

Using direct flash allowed me to embrace that energy rather than observe it from a distance. Against the darkness of the city, people, colors, sequins, and gestures emerge almost theatrically from the crowd. These photographs are my record of encountering a kind of public freedom and self-expression that felt completely new to me.
